“The first impression is the best impression’ - There is a reason why people say this because you can’t make the first impression twice. You only get one chance to make an impression. That’s why it is essential to understand the points listed below, so you know what to avoid to make a positive and lasting first impression.

Weak handshake - A weak handshake is a bad sign. According to the experts, a weak handshake will let people believe that you’re shy, less open, and anxious. Now you don’t have to overly aggressive or replicate the long political handshake. That is not good either. Just make sure you follow the two-second-rule and give a firm handshake.

Wrong hand position – We often don’t control what’s going on with our hands, especially if we are at an important meeting. But the important thing is that you need to avoid is to put hands in your pockets. That could suggest to the other person that you are hiding something. You can set your hands on the table, but try not to squeeze them. Squeezing your hands is an indication that you are trying to control the situation.

Chewing gums – Chewing gum is only acceptable if you are hanging out with your friends. But if you are at a job interview, chewing gum is a bad idea and is not considered professional.

Avoiding eye contact - Maintaining eye contact is one of the most important things for that first impression. You don’t want to look away while you are having a conversation with someone. Avoiding eye contact is a sign of anxiety. If you want people to judge you as confident and intelligent, make sure you hold eye contact while talking to them.

Playing with your hair – When a woman is on a date with a guy she likes, it is considered a sign of flirting if she plays with her hair. But you don’t want to flirt during a job interview or a professional situation, which means you don’t want to play with your hair. On average, women tend to touch or play with their hair up to 18 times a day, which means that playing with your hair can quickly transform into a habit. However, if you want to look professional and focused during important meetings, make sure you keep hands away from your hair.

Failing to ask good questions – To build rapport and credibility quickly, ensure you ask open-ended questions. For example, find out how the other person got started in their industry or ended up in their job roles or city. Ask about their goals and dream to see how you can help them, with questions like, ‘Where do you want to be in 10 years?’ You’ll get to know the person better, communicate that you’re thoughtful and curious, and grow your knowledge.

Speaking before you listen – This is a habit that can give the opposite person a wrong impression. Be a good listener, and ensure you listen to others as well before you speak.

It is you who make or break impressions. Ensure to follow the above steps that will help you build a strong professional impression.
