Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can occur from any activities that you go through as part of your day to day life (events, thoughts, etc.) that make you frustrated, angry, or nervous. Stress is your body’s reaction to a challenge or a demand. If this stress lasts for a long time, it may harm your health. Some stress can bring positive results, like meeting a deadline or avoiding a dangerous situation. However, this stress should only be taken for a shorter period of time.

What are the causes of stress?

The reasons may vary from person to person. However, some of the common causes are;

· Emotional problems like depression, anxiety, anger, grief, guilt, low self-esteem.

· Chronic illness or injury

· Moving out of your comfort zone or changing your daily rotuine like moving into a new home or living with new people.

· Increase in financial obligations or work stress

· Loss of a job or perceived failures in work-life

· Passing of a loved one or pets

· Divorce

· Getting Married, dating someone new etc.

· Problems at home and relationships

Your body reacts to stress by releasing hormones. These hormones make your brain more alert, cause your muscles to tense, and increase your pulse. In the short term, these reactions are good because these will help you handle the situation. However, when the stress is for the longer-term, it will impact your health.

It may cause severe health problems like Heart Attack, High blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression or anxiety, skin problems, and other extreme medical conditions. If you are under medication for some illness, then stress can make that situation worse.

What are some of the signs of too much stress?

· Diarrhea or constipation

· Forgetfulness

· Frequent aches and pains

· Headaches

· Stiff jaws and stiff necks

· Tiredness

· Trouble in sleeping

· Weight loss or weight gain

· Issues with libido

· Sleeping too much

· Use of alcohol or other harmful items to relax

· Lack of energy and unable to focus

How can you overcome stress?

· Always keep a positive attitude.

· Accept that there are some things that are not under your control.

· Be assertive instead of aggressive.

· Learn to practice relaxation techniques.

· Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.

· Exercise regularly. Your body can fight stress better when it is fit.

· Learn to manage your time more effectively.

· Set limits appropriately and learn to say ‘No’ to the request that would create excessive stress.

· Make time for hobbies and interests every day.

· Learn to socialize. Spend enough time with those who you enjoy spending time with

· Ensure to get enough rest and sleep.

· Seek help from a psychologist or a mental health professional trained in stress management.

Remember, stress is part of life. Learn to accept it. While some people waste time and energy thinking like ‘I shouldn’t have to deal with this’, People who you can deem successful know that setbacks, problems, and hardships are inevitable. When a stressful situation arises, they devote their best efforts to doing what they can and to move forward even when they can’t change the circumstances. They know they can always take steps to improve their lives.
