"Mental Health" is widely in conversation today. People are recognizing and analyzing their minds and feelings more than ever before. But there are many categorizations and self-diagnosis that are readily available to everyone that may mislead a person and set them on the wrong path. We bring you some essential things that you should know before diving deep into the vast sea of internet knowledge. These tips will also help you asses what is going on within your mind and better understand the behavior of people around you.
1. Depression is a SERIOUS ailment.
The word depression is thrown around extremely carelessly; many people believe that depression is something that is all in the head. This is far from the truth. It is more than just a chemical imbalance. (https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/what-causes-depression). There are parts of the brain that are directly affected by depression. Just like when you catch a cold, you do not tell someone that it is only in their lungs, you advice them to visit a professional doctor and take medicine. Depression is something that has to be taken seriously as it is far worse than a common cold.
2. Depression comes in all forms
Every individual that suffers from depression may suffer from varying extremities of the ailment, and every person will have a unique event or collection of facts (events can mean physical, internal or environmental happenings) that can trigger depression. It has also been said that depression is experienced in varying degrees. Some people might be on the far end of the spectrum where daily tasks become an issue whereas some people might only experience it but can still carry on with their normal routines. So whenever you deal with yourself or someone in the light that they might suffer from depression, always keep this point in mind and as the reasons are different so will be the solutions. There may not be a solution in a few cases.
3. Do not say, Live Laugh Love
Do not tell any depressed person the following:
Get over it!
Move on!
Live, Laugh, Love...
Have a hearty meal
Go on a vacation
The above-mentioned solutions can have the reverse effect as the person in depression needs to be motivated or inspired from within. Sayings and quotes might look empty to the other person as they are not in a state. Rather than preaching what a person should or shouldn't do, it is better to be there for the person unconditionally and not trying to find a cure instantly. If they want to talk it out, then let them.
IT is extremely important to be compassionate with yourself if you are dealing with depression as well as someone else who is going through it. You may need to seek professional help and look after them in every possible way. It takes time, patience and care for someone to heal and feel good again.
