A long time ago, somewhere in Italy, a starting out painter painted a beautiful masterpiece. Satisfied with his work, he went on to admire it and show it to his other friends.

He knew that audience is the biggest critic so, in order to make his name and stay humble at the same time, he decided to display his painting in the main square of the town. Also, he attached a note to the top of the picture with a pencil. The note said:

“If you find any mistakes, please point it out.”

He kept the painting in the morning and went back to his house. Later that evening he came back to collect it and was horrified by the results.

When he picked it up, it was a mess. Many people had pointed out his mistakes and circled them, and as a result, the painting now had a hundred wrong things with it. Looking at the results, he was pretty dejected.

He took this painting to his master and blamed him for teaching him wrong ways of art. He went on to say that whatever he had taught him had so many mistakes, and his technique is not appreciated by the public at all. Instead of all this, he decided he wouldn’t paint again.

The master smiled and advised his student to do one last thing before giving up.

He asked the artist to remove the pencil marks from his painting and bring it back to him.

When the confused artist bought it back, the master attached a note on the painting saying:

“Please correct the mistakes on this painting by this pencil.”

The master now asked the artist to place the picture in the same location with a pencil. The artist kept it next morning in the same square.

When he returned later, he was amazed to find the painting. The painting was clean, without even a single correction. The artist took his masterpiece to his master and asked why the people who so eagerly pointed out the mistakes, didn’t correct them.

The master then explained this gem of a lesson to him:

“People will always point out mistakes on anything and everything, but when the time comes to create or do even the slightest of effort to rectify it, they will back out. A creator should remain unfazed in such situations. People are always very quick to point out mistakes with whatever you do instead of trying and taking advice from the learned. Criticism helps you improve but keep in mind that the excessive of it shouldn't ever deject you. It’s your work/creation. Respect it and strive yourself to be your perfect version.”

The artist was very glad to hear this and went to create many more masterpieces and amassing fame and money.
