If you have set your mind to have SMART goals, let's see how you can formulate your goals...
Let’s move from the specifics and go to the next letter.
Measurable means that your goal should be translatable in numbers. Not only you should be able to track and record your progress each and every step of your way quantitatively but also be able to measure your ultimate goal when you have achieved it.
The above talked about notebook would be a great tool to record your success.
When you sit and write about your progress every day, you are pushed to make even more progress and not flake out. Be your manager and report it to yourself at the end of each day. What did you do today to accomplish that goal?
Write it down.
The next attribute that your goal should have is that it should be attainable, you should think that you can reach it.
Don’t set absurd goals like losing 30 pounds in a month which is not only very tough to do but very unhealthy as well. Make sure that you believe in your goal.
You should have strong belief to make it happen for you. If you set a goal that is too high or vague for you, you will lose interest in following it and will give up. We often set up unrealistic goals and then the energy just fizzes out.
Don’t get me wrong, you should aim high, but you need to break it up realistically. If you do want to reduce 30 pounds, set this goal up for a year rather than a month or two.
Relevant and Timely are the next attributes that our goals need to possess. It needs to be relevant to you, for example, if losing ten pounds will lower your body mass index in the unhealthy category then you should just lose five pounds. Also, we have discussed the importance of time setting earlier but to reinforce this point you should set up a time limit.
A time limit will help you accelerate your efforts by putting a slight pressure on you, and many of us know sometimes this pressure is important to complete anything as it establishes urgency and promotes time management.
Now if you follow the above guidelines, you should have a perfectly set up goal, rich in all attributes and ready to be completed! I would suggest that you make this goal concise and make a paragraph out of it.
Write or print it and put it up on your desk or somewhere you are bound to see it again and again. You should also make it a point to read it first thing in the morning and last thing before you sleep.
A constant reminder will always keep you on track and achieve your dreams.
